The Winner! 2010/11
"The Old Thatch Inn"
Castledawson

John Shivers and myself outside the Old Thatch Inn.
For quite a few decades now I have journeyed to
an old country graveyard near Castlewellan to take care of a family plot. It has become part of family
tradition to call into the Old Thatch Inn on the way home after the work has
been done and lunch beckons.
It is nice to come in here to a relaxed lounge knowing good, old fashioned style
food will soon be on the table. In winter time there is the encouragement of a
roaring fire and the smell of peat to warm the body and the gentle low buzz of
conversation relax the mind.
I was a bit worried when I found out some time back about the place being for
sale. I need not have been concerned, as the new owners are very keen to keep the
premise and the food as it always was. John assures me that plans are underway
to move forward while still keeping the pub as traditional as it has been.
The pub sits on the Hillhead Road, now bypassed by a new and faster road. What
better to turn off the highway and enjoy good food, good service and a good
relaxing time?
