The Ship Inn
The Ship Inn 97 St. Michael Street
Dumfries
DG1 2PY
(01387) 55189 (T)

Unspoiled, old fashioned traditional pub at the lights across from the Burns Mausoleum. Sadly, one of the few remaining examples of a town pub. Small front bar filled with memorabilia leading on to a lounge and welcoming fire at the back. Situated directly opposite the historic St Michaels Kirkyard where Robert Burns is buried and is within 300 yards of Burns House where the poet spent the last few years of his life.

The Harbour House Hotel
The Harbour House Hotel 53 Main Street
Portpatrick
DG9 8JW
(01776) 810456 (T)

Open plan lounge overlooking the picturesque harbour. Restaurant to one side. Circular stairs lead up to rooms and down to toilets set within old stone walls. Good beers and a friendly service. Childrens certificate. So easy to sit here and watch the tides rise and fall. Busy on weekend nights. However, the ale may not be on all of the time.

The Globe Inn
The Globe Inn 56 High Street
Dumfries
DG1 2JA
(01387) 252335 (T)

This three storey inn is packed with history. Situated at the end of a narrow alleyway at the bottom of the town square and leading on to an open square. Easy to miss.

A tiny public bar with a sliding door has plain wooden seats and benches with lots of local horse pictures. Along the corridor is the lounge and eating area. To the other side is the stairs and eating room with old fashioned range fire and on into another restaurant room. Wood panelling and seating. Live music. However, it is upstairs that is the gem. Ask for a guided tour and you will see the amazingly small bed that Robbie Burns slept in. He had a single room and would often scratch poems on the window glass. It has hardly changed and is a step back into history.

Robert the Bruce
Robert the Bruce 1 Buccleuch Street
Dumfries
DG1 1DJ

Once a Methodist chapel it is an imposing building with Ionian columned entrance set in red sandstone, Gothic lancet windows and an Jacobean balastrade. It has a well laid out bar with high tables and balcony seating. Look up and see the well decorated cupola. A lounge area to one side with standard tables. Typical JDW fare, prices & selection in a relaxed atmosphere. Smoking area to the rear.

Portpatrick Brewery is run by Keith and Lynne-Marie Stebbens. Keith has about 20 years experience as a home brewer and has taken the plunge in turning a hobby into a business. The one barrel plant is producing both cask and bottled ales.
