Pats Bar

Belfast
BT1 3AA
(028) 9074 4524 (T)
Around the corner from the Rotterdam with the tramlines still embedded in the street, stands Pats Bar. Another old fashioned street corner pub not vandalised by the big players. Friendly owner. New section to rear. Look out for the old railway tracks at the front of the pub.
Still standing but a demolition order in 2008 meant it would become an apartment block - rumours of a 32 storey building!
End of an era!
The Garrick Bar

Belfast
BT1 4JB
The downstairs bar still has the old fashioned interior: wood panelling, frosted windows, tesserae bordered floor with a large mirrored wood backdrop. A good selection of bottled beers and serving cask ale. There is a huge selection of beer bottles on a high wall shelf. The old pillars are still in place and it has a large mirrored snob screen an one end. On the other side is the downstairs lounge and restaurant. The stairs lead up to the toilets and the upstairs dining area, which still keeps its great fireplace, though not used now.

Morning Star

Dating back to the early 1800s, this pub has been tastefully renovated recently and has become a Mecca for good food aficionados who queue up to sample the cuisine at the special gourmet nights. Good lunches and fine Guinness mean that this place is always well frequented.

The Mermaid

Belfast
BT1 4DQ
(028) 9032 7829 (T)
One of Central Belfasts last alleyway pubs that has not been renovated, except for some cafe-bar style doors that lead onto the entry patio and caters mostly for smokers, though great on a summers day. Still showing its 60s decor but serving great lunchtime food. The staff are very friendly and always helpful. It is a haven of peace in a bustling shopping centre. Popular with local office workers, it still has its many regulars and those who take respite from shopping madness. It closes early at nights unless there are customers there to keep it open. By the way, it is bigger than you think when you first walk in.

The Duke of York

Belfast
BT1 2NB
(028) 9024 1062 (T)
Sitting in an entry where one end has a burgeoning nightlife and the other end leads to what was once the "Fleet Street" of Belfast. Beloved of the hacks from the local press and aficionados of good music. Two rooms downstairs and one upstairs, drinking now extends into the alleyway itself. Brewery memorabilia including a Worthington Green Shield beer mat! Now has the Dark Horse Bar opposite.
